While experimenting with the top ruffle section on my original Santa storage baskets an idea came into mind that I should try doing a bearded version of these baskets. This idea appeared after a particularly disastrous ruffle attempt where I had way to many ruffles within a stitch – some positives do sometimes appear out from a disaster it seems!
I love how the beard detail has come out on these baskets and can’t wait for their recipients to see them at Christmas.

Materials
- 6mm crochet hook.
- 2x100g balls of DK wool in red .
- 1x50g ball of DK wool in black.
- 1x50g ball of DK wool in white.
- 1x25g ball of DK wool in grey.
- Darning needle.
- Scissors.
- Stitch marker.

Large:
- Height – 11cm.
- Diameter – 18cm.
Small:
- Height – 11cm.

Santa Beard Storage Basket Crochet Pattern: Small Basket
Main Basket:
6mm hook, red wool, using 2 strands at the same time.
Make a magic ring, ch1, 10sc into ring (10sc).
Round 1: sc around (10sc).
Round 2: 2sc into each sc (20sc).
Round 3: 2sc into next sc, sc into next stitch. Repeat around (30sc).
Round 4: sc around (30sc).
Round 5: 2sc into next sc, sc into next two stitches. Repeat around (40sc).
Round 6: sc around (40sc).
Round 7: 2sc into next sc, sc into next three stitches. Repeat around (50sc).
Round 8: sc around (50sc).
Round 9: sc around in back loops only (50sc).
Rounds 10-13: sc around (50sc).
Change to black.
Round 14: 22sc, ch2, skip 2sc, 2sc, ch2, skip 2sc, 22sc.
Rounds 15-16: sc around (50sc).
Round 17: 22sc, ch2, skip 2sc, 2sc, ch2, skip 2sc, 22sc.
Change to red.

Beard Detail
6mm hook, white wool, using 2 strands at the same time:
Row 1: Skip 21sc, cast on (pull up loop, ch1), [(sc, htr(UK)/hdc(US), tr(UK)/dc(US)) into next stitch, (tr(UK)/dc(US), htr(UK)/hdc(US), sc) into next stitch)] four times, turn, leaving rest of the row unworked.
Row 2: sc2tog twice, sc, (htr(UK)/hdc(US), sc) along row until 5 stitches remain, sc, sc2tog twice.
Row 3: ch1(doesn’t count as a stitch) sc2tog twice, sc (htr(UK)/hdc(US), sc) along row until 5 stitches remain, sc, sc2tog twice.
Rows 4-5: repeat row 3.
Row 6: ch1(doesn’t count as a stitch) sc2tog, (htr(UK)/hdc(US),sc) along row until 3 stitches remain, sc, sc2tog.
Fasten off.
Belt Buckles
Make 2.
6mm hook, grey wool, using 2 strands at the same time.
ch8, sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc along rest of the row.
Fasten off leaving long thread to attach.
Sew belt buckles into place by threading through the gaps in the basket and sewing the two ends together on the inside of the basket.

Main Basket:
6mm hook, red wool, using 2 strands at the same time.
Make a magic ring, ch1, 10sc into ring (10sc).
Round 1: sc around (10sc).
