I previously made a folded crochet granny square Christmas tree decoration and decided I wanted to make a slightly smaller version too – perfect for using as tags on smaller gifts where the previous tree was a little too big. These smaller folded granny square trees would also be great for making bunting – something I definitely to make next, tree bunting would be great for decorating with at Christmas and would also make a perfect gift.

I used a few different shades of green for this tree but you could use just one shade of green or another colour of your choice or all different colours. For the buttons I used different shades of green but they can be all the same colour or different colours/shades. If you don’t want to use buttons you could use the crochet details I used on my corner to corner folded Christmas tree or use a mixture of both.

Finished Size:

Completed Tree:

• 14cm Tall, 9cm at widest point.

• 6 buttons.
• 4mm crochet hook.
• DK wool in your chosen colour/colours.
• Scissors.

Folded Granny Square Crochet And Button Tree Christmas Decoration – Part 2: Granny Squares

• Granny square 1:

ch4, ss into 1st sc to make a round.

Round 1: into ring – ch2(counts as a htr(UK)/hdc(US)), 2htr(UK)/hdc(US), (ch2, 3htr(UK)/hdc(US)) 3 times. ch2, sc into top of ch2 at start of the round.

Round 2: ch1 (doesn’t count as a stitch) ss into ch2 space, 2ss (one into the top of each htr(UK)/hdc(US) from previous round) 2ss into ch2 gap, 3ss (one into top of each htr(UK)/hdc(US) from the previous round, *(ss, sc, ss) into ch2 gap, ss into next stitch. Repeat from * 3 more times, (ss, sc) into ch2 space. ss into top of first ss of the round. Fasten off.

• Granny square 2:

ch4, ss into 1st sc to make a round.

Round 1: into ring – ch3(counts as a tr(UK)/dc(US)), 2tr(UK)/dc(US), (ch2, 3tr(UK)/dc(US)) 3 times. ch2, sc into top of ch3 at start of the round.

Round 2: ch1 (doesn’t count as a stitch) sc into ch2 space, 2sc (one into the top of each tr(UK)/dc(US) from previous round) 2sc into ch2 gap, 3sc (one into top of each tr(UK)/dc(US) from the previous round, *(sc, tr(UK)/dc(US), sc) into ch2 gap, ss into next stitch. • Granny square 3:

• Granny square 4:

ch4, ss into 1st sc to make a round.

• Granny square tree trunk:

ch4, ss into 1st sc to make a round.

Round 1: into ring – ch2(counts as a htr(UK)/hdc(US)), 2htr(UK)/hdc(US), (ch2, 3htr(UK)/hdc(US)) 3 times. ch2, sc into top of ch2 at start of the round.

Folded Granny Square Crochet And Button Tree Christmas Decoration – Part 2: Assembly

1. Take the smallest granny square, place so the wavy edges are at the bottom. Fold up the bottom edge and sew to secure, attach button.

2. Take the next granny square and place behind the first, sew to secure, fold up the bottom edge and attach button and secure. Repeat with the remaining granny squares.

3. Sew the trunk onto back along the bottom edge of the last granny square.

4. To create a hanging loop for the tree ch20, fasten off leaving a long thread to attach then attach to the top point of the first granny square.
