Sewing Tutorial: With Love Heart Themed Button Detail Embroidery Hoop

Need a quick make for valentines day? – this heart themed embroidery hoop is the perfect solution. It is also a great idea for using up all those buttons that seem to grow in number by themselves!.

The background fabric colour/pattern is entirely your choice – it can be plain or you could find one that is suited to your recipient. You could also choose to change the colour of the buttons to match a colour scheme or do a multi-coloured star.

Fabric gifted by The Craft Cotton Company.

Materials:

  • Embroidery hoop – this can be any size you want, so the gift could be as small or as big as you want.
  • Piece of fabric for the background – the size of this is dependant upon the size of embroidery hoop you use – make sure you have a piece of fabric that is at least 10cm bigger than the embroidery hoop, otherwise it will be too small to stay inside the hoop after finishing.
  • Piece of felt for the back of the hoop – you will need a piece that is big enough to cover the back of the embroidery hoop.
  • Pink buttons – or another if you prefer, you could also make a multi-coloured star.
  • Pink blue embroidery thread for the writing.
  • Blue sewing thread for attaching the buttons.
  • Needle.
  • Scissors.
  • Pins/safety pins.
  • Paper.
  • Pencil.

  1. Take your piece of paper and draw the outline of your heart – make sure the finished heart size will fit inside the hoop with stalk and writing details. Place the fabric in the embroidery hoop then pin the heart template onto it.

  1. Cast on to the fabric and start sewing on the buttons inside the heart template. Continue attaching buttons until the template is completely full.

  1. If you have space along the base of the heart template write out ‘With Love’, otherwise take a new piece of paper, place and pin to secure along the bottom edge of the hoop and write it out. Sew along the lines using running stitch. Remove the paper by tearing away.

  1. Trim off the excess fabric from around the embroidery hoop leaving 8cm of fabric around the hoop. Cast on using the sewing thread and sew around the edge of the fabric 1cm from the raw edge. Pull tight and sew to secure.

  1. Take your felt backing piece and cut so it is 1cm smaller than the embroidery hoop, next sew onto the back of the hoop.

  1. Use ribbon to create a loop for displaying.
