Materials:
- Embroidery hoop – this can be any size you want, so the gift could be as small or as big as you want.
- Piece of fabric for the background – the size of this is dependant upon the size of embroidery hoop you use – make sure you have a piece of fabric that is at least 10cm bigger than the embroidery hoop, otherwise it will be too small to stay inside the hoop after finishing.
- Piece of felt for the back of the hoop – you will need a piece that is big enough to cover the back of the embroidery hoop.
- Small piece of green and brown felt – for the apple stalk and leaf.
- Red buttons – or green if you prefer.
- Dark blue, green and brown embroidery thread for the writing, leaf and stalk.
- Red sewing thread for attaching the buttons.
- Needle.
- Scissors.
- Pins/safety pins.
- Paper.
- Pencil.
Sewing Tutorial: Thank You Gift – Button Apple Embroidery Hoop
- Take your piece of paper and draw the outline of your apple – make sure the finished apple size will fit inside the hoop with stalk and writing details. Place the fabric in the embroidery hoop then pin the apple template onto it.

- Cast on to the fabric and start sewing on the buttons inside the apple template. Continue attaching buttons until the template is completely full. Next remove the paper template by tearing off the paper from behind the buttons.
- Cut out a stalk and leaf detail and attach above the apple.
- Take a piece of paper, place along the bottom of the hoop and write out ‘Thank You’. Pin to the embroidery hoop and sew along the lines using running stitch. Remove the paper by tearing away.
- Trim off the excess fabric from around the embroidery hoop leaving 8cm of fabric around the hoop. Cast on using the sewing thread and sew around the edge of the fabric 1cm from the raw edge. Pull tight and sew to secure.
- Take your felt backing piece and cut so it is 1cm smaller than the embroidery hoop, next sew onto the back of the hoop.
- Use ribbon to create a loop for displaying.
