Sewing Tutorial: Easter Rabbit Cosy With Pocket Detail

Spring makes continue with some bouncy rabbits

After making some spring themed drawstring bags (Sewing tutorial for an Easter Chick themed drawstring bag) I decided to keep on going with the spring themed makes and make an Easter Bunny rabbit cosy with secret storage pouch – Perfect for hiding some Easter eggs in!.

I used The Craft Cotton Company yarn dyed stripe fabric for these as I thought the colours would work out really well.

You could always add stuffing to this rabbit cosy and make it into a mini cushion for Easter too.

  1. On paper draw out an outline of a rabbit body, 2 ears, nose, tail and a tummy.  Make a second copy of the ear templates and then cut one of the ear templates in half so there are two pattern pieces for the ears (one whole ear and one a half ear template).

  1. Next use these templates to cut out the fabric leaving a 0.5cm seam allowance.   You will need two pieces of fabric for the body, nose, tail and tummy, and 2 ear pieces from the whole ear template and 4 from the cut in half ear template (two in two different colours).

  1. Use the templates to cut out a piece of batting for the body and tummy.

  1. Take the ear pieces, and taking two front pieces (one in each colour) place right sides together and sew down the side.  Take the whole back piece and place the front and back pieces right sides together and sew around leaving the bottom edge unsewn.  Turn out the right way and repeat for the other ear.

  1. Take the two nose pieces and batting, place right sides together and sew around leaving a 3cm gap for turning.  Turn out the right way and slip stitch the gap closed.

  1. Take the two tummy pieces and batting, place down the batting piece, then place the two tummy pieces rights sides together on top of the batting.  Sew around leaving the bottom edge unsewn then turn out the right way.

  1. Sew the nose to the front of the rabbit body. Next using the embroidery thread sew on a mouth and eye detail.

  1. Place the body bating piece down and place front of the body down face up on top, place the tummy piece on top and the ears with the raw edges of the ears and tummy against the raw edge of the rabbit body, place the back body piece on top and pin to secure.  Sew around the edge leaving a gap for turning.  Turn the right way and slip stitch the gap closed.

Fabric was gifted by The Craft Cotton Company.
